The Full Fare
How this works
Every room, every meal, every ticket is paid for at full price.
No comped stays. No sponsored posts. No booking commissions. No affiliate links. No discount arranged in advance and no discount accepted on arrival. Nowhere is reviewed that has not been personally visited and personally paid for, recently.
This is the whole business model. The reader is the customer. Nobody else is.
Every trip is judged against what it was for.
A farmhouse in the Umbrian hills and a beach resort in Hawaii are not comparable, and pretending otherwise is how most travel reviews become useless. One was asked to put thirty hill towns within an hour's drive. The other was asked to make sure no decision had to be made for six days. Those are different jobs. A verdict that ignores the job is decoration.
So every brief opens with its terms: what the trip was for, who was travelling, and the constraint everything was booked against. Everything that follows is judged against those terms and nothing else.
Trips are one or two of five types.
- Explore
- Covering an area from a base. Judged on reach and on how well the base works at the end of a long day.
- Table
- Food and wine as the reason for going. Judged on proximity to the table and on what was actually eaten.
- City
- The place itself. Judged on location above amenity, and on the walk at seven in the morning and eleven at night.
- Reset
- Recovery. Judged on the room, the grounds, and how few decisions were required.
- Occasion
- A milestone. Judged on the one thing that had to be right.
The same place can get different verdicts.
A hotel that is worth every euro as an explore base can be the wrong booking for a reset, at the same price, in the same week. Both verdicts can be correct. Every verdict states who it is for and who it is not for, so it is clear which one is being made.
The Cut
Every brief publishes what was rejected and why. A shortlist without a longlist is a guess. The eliminations are usually more useful than the recommendations, because they tell you what has already been checked so you do not check it again.
What this is not
Not a ranking. Not a guide to everywhere. Not a list of the best hotels in a country. It is a small number of trips, done properly, with the receipts attached and the reasoning shown.
How long is a trip
As long as it was. Some briefs run eight nights across two bases, some run two. The trip is not trimmed or padded to fit a format. What is fixed is the shape of the answer: one base per leg, exact bookings, one thing worth overpaying for, one thing to skip, and the invoice.
Corrections
Places change. Chefs leave, owners sell, standards move. Anything found to be wrong is corrected on the page and the change is noted. Nothing is quietly deleted.
